Molotov Cocktease is, for me, the artichoke heart in the tasty salad of The Venture Bros. (That means she’s amazing and awesoome, in case you don’t know!) So, to create the costume for her and have it work out physics-wise, was something I had fantasized about for quite awhile. Then there was Vivka, who is the perfect match for some of my more ambitious costuming goals, and my enthusiasm for seeing them realized. The phrase “pin-up” came into a speculative conversation we were having and also “cosplay” and after just a few moments along this line of thinking I realized Molotov would be an excellent answer to the question at hand.
Naturally, like so many great ideas, this one arrived just as the pre-SDCC insanity was really getting into it’s stride. Somewhere in June, I believe it was. Did that stop us? Hah! Nyet.
Initially, I was determined to avoid the use of transparent straps, and for the record, I would like it to be known that I succeeded. However. I do like to make sure that my customers can actually walk around at con and enjoy themselves to a reasonable extent. The strapless version of the costume would really only work if Vivka were to stand still most of the time, or to move very cautiously. So even though my genius structural plan did function, I ended up adding clear straps in the end.
Can you see them?
They’re there. They didn’t get photoshopped out, I promise. Neat, huh?
The straps are made from 2 layers of skin-colored tulle. I wanted to avoid using clear plastic because it’s almost always so shiny.
But as I said, the straps were an afterthought. The main challenges of this costume were: a.) Find a fabric that is black, stretchy and has some kind of a texture to it but is NOT shiny! Texture is something Vivka and I both take some pride in. I like to have textured materials whenever possible in my costumes because it sets them apart from the rest. I apologize for the fact that you can hardly see this magnificent texture in most of these photos. I was having some issues uploading the files in their original (huge!) size, but you can get a bit of a look at it in that last photo, mostly on her eye patch. It’s a kind of reptilian thing.
And b.) Find a way to create the lovely shape of Molotov’s neckline (if you can call it that…) and have it stay in place, supporting her, adhering to her and not being too terribly rigid.
In the end, I tested out several different kinds of plastic and finally found one that was flexible, but strong and thin enough to do the job. I don’t know what it is called. Perhaps Steve? I think it’s some kind of polystyrene. I got it at a hardware store. Basically, if you’re doing this yourself and trying to figure out which one to use, bend it and see if it breaks. If you can bend it almost completely double and it still won’t crack, that’s the winner.
Both of these tasks were basically accomplished by sheer force of will and pre-SDCC madness.
By the way, despite the timing, the purpose of this costume was actually for Vivka to wear it in the Cosplay Deviants 2014 pin-up calendar, which she did! I don’t know whether you can still get one though.
I believe you can still view the complete set of these lovely photos at www.cosplaydeviants.com, and I highly recommend it!
